A few examples of places worth visiting and suggested excursions in the area.

Stein am Rhein

This town, where the houses and gates are decorated with balconies and frescos, is one of the most beautiful sights on the Upper Rhine. With its town hall and the Benedictine Monastery of St. George, Stein am Rhein is considered to be the best-preserved medieval small town in Switzerland. A steep road leads up through vineyards in a northerly direction for two kilometres to Burg Hohenklingen, a castle dating from the 12th century.

The capital city of the Schaffhausen Canton, this town lying near the Rhine Falls is architecturally one of the most interesting and well-preserved towns of the Middle Ages. Items worth seeing include the characteristic houses from different centuries with their balconies, the Haus zum Ritter (the Knight's House), the former All Saints Monastery with its Schillerglocke (Schiller bell, the Minster and the All Saints museum. In addition, there is the symbol of the town, the old Munot fortress (built between 1564 and 1585 by the citizens of the town).

The Rhine Falls

The Rhine falls, the largest waterfall in Europe, provides the visitor with a grandiose spectacle. Over a width of 150 m and a height of 23 m, 700 cubic metres of water tumble down the cliff every second when the Rhine is flowing normally. From the Rhine Falls basin you can experience the full power of the mass of water. The central cliff, which you can climb up, is also worth a visit, or you can drive to the Zürich side of the Falls and further downstream. From the castle Schloss Laufen there is a footpath that leads past the raging waters to the "Kanzeli" platform, standing directly in front of the Rhine falls.

A boat trip on the Untersee and the Rhine

The idyllic Untersee, the southwestern section of Lake Constance, has been repeatedly described as the pearl of the third largest inland body of water in Europe. Picturesque fishing villages with medieval houses and castles pass by in front of the passenger's gaze. This trip through the Rhine landscape between Stein am Rhein and Schaffhausen is justifiably considered to be one of the finest river journeys in Europe. The undeveloped river banks, the rich green of the woods and meadows, the natural flow of the river; these all create impressions that coalesce into an unforgettable experience.

As the highest and most magnificent peak, the Säntis (2502 m above sea level) towers above the Appenzell region and the whole of the area around Lake Constance. It offers the visitor spectacular views over mountains and valleys in six different countries. On the Schwägealp (1352 m above sea level), at the foot of the Säntis, there is protected moorland, boasting a wide variety of different plants and animals and traditional alpine activities.
